Avoiding serious accidents for their stakeholders should be the number one concern of any CEO. In the Construction Industry, hazards are commonplace and employees are often scattered across geographies. Developing a high-level safety culture is difficult at best.
Most employees develop their attitudes about safety from their employer; they develop their habits from work. As company leaders, this is a big responsibility – ensuring your employees work in a culture that places their safety above all else.
There are four types of safety cultures in an organization. These include:
Which one of these do you feel is your current culture and where would you like to be?
In my 40+ years working in the construction industry and 25 years as President/CEO, I have witnessed cultural failures that resulted in serious injuries to my employees. Simply put, we were not as good as we thought we were. Our statistics, while world class, were always one injury away from something serious. Using certain processes for engagement, awareness, and accountability, we achieved an even safer culture.
Join me as we explore your organization’s safety methodologies and find opportunities for improvement together. It is my belief that as you explore and implement these suggestions, you will set your company down the path to building a truly integral culture of safety. This will improve your statistics, but also ensure you are doing everything you can to prevent accidents and protect your most important asset – your people.
